A History of Quality and Community
Nationwide has been actively investing in commercial and residential real estate for more than 50 years. The company’s development approach emphasizes quality and collaboration. This focus reflects the company’s belief that an investment in a project is an investment in a community.
Starting in the early 1970s, Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company began planning a modern high-rise office tower and public plaza in downtown Columbus where it could serve as a strong, vibrant contributor to the growing Columbus community. The designated headquarters location, where the Arena District is now located, was in a blighted state, home to mostly a warehouse district and the Ohio Penitentiary.
Nationwide broke ground on their One Nationwide Plaza headquarters building in July of 1974 at the corner of High Street and Nationwide Boulevard. The 40-story, 1,328,000 square foot tower and related garages, walkways and green space was a catalyst for the remarkable rebirth of downtown Columbus and surrounding neighborhoods.
Nationwide Realty Investors was formed in 1997 as Nationwide’s dedicated real estate development affiliate. The newly formed development company created a holistic plan to transform the entire area around Nationwide headquarters into a lively neighborhood. The Arena District would include 75 acres of offices, housing, restaurants and entertainment venues. The design would seamlessly integrate new and old buildings with city streets, sidewalks and public gathering places.
Today, the Arena District spans more than 200 acres, with 1.5 million square feet of commercial office space, over 1,200 residential units, and top sports and entertainment destinations including Nationwide Arena, home of the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets, Huntington Park, home to the Triple-A Columbus Clippers, Lower.com Field, home of the MLS Columbus Crew, and Kemba Live!.
Nationwide Realty Investors’ $2 billion Arena District is a premier model of urban neighborhood development – a synergy of urban living, downtown working and city nightlife. See the project’s 20-year evolution and milestones HERE.
In addition to the catalytic Arena District, Nationwide Realty Investors is actively developing large-scale, complex, mixed-use projects in Central Ohio and Arizona. The company’s $2.5 billion portfolio includes the 250- acre mixed-use Rivulon development in Gilbert, Arizona, Gainey Ranch Corporate Center and the 134-acre Cavasson development in Scottsdale, the Jerome Village and Northstar Community residential neighborhoods in Central Ohio, the 125-acre Grandview Yard development in Grandview Heights, Ohio, as well as signature hotels, event centers, condominium and apartment projects in both Ohio and Arizona.
